Bill Drummond – a discussion about our relation with music…

Thanks to BassMusicBlog.com for this very interesting topic….

You know who Bill Drummond is, don’t you.  Manager of Echo and The Bunnymen, one half of The KLF, artist, prankster, author. His book ‘45′ is a fantastic read and comes highly recommended.
Anyway, over at the KLF Online they’ve just drawn our attention to this podcast, in which he discusses the history of recorded music (part 19), and how it changed our whole relationship with music, repeatedly, and is currently doing so again.  I’ll try not to spoil it too much, but the basic thrust is that once upon a time, if you wanted to hear a certain type of music you had to be in a certain place at a certain time (ie a concert hall or church).  Now you can pretty much store the entirety of musical history on an iPod and listen to African drummers on the bus or 150-piece orchestras while you’re taking a dump.  It’s pretty mad when you think of it like that.  Bill argues that this essentially makes recorded music meaningless and is quite convincing with it, although he usually convinces me, whatever it is he’s trying to argue.

Brent from Black Noise sent over their summer mix. Black Noise is a new     project from the crew behind a couple of well known names and labels - taking all the classic old skool influences from their many years in the game and mashing em up inna very current sound, they’ve been picked up by Southern Fried and have already been churning out big room mixes for people like Diplo. Well worth checking out!

Some infos….

Born Matt Coleman, MJ Cole had released a few 12″s on labels like Rhythm Division and Fresh Groove Traxx in the mid-90s before dropping ‘Sincere’ in ‘98, an era-defining single that was both one of the biggest influences on 21st century British music, and an overground smash (Pete Tong was on the track from its original batch of 20 test pressings). Cole went on to sign to Giles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label, where he put out Sincere the album; one of – if not the – defining garage full-length, and one that spawned the massive single ‘Crazy Love’. It was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

Recent years for Cole have been defined by a steady flow of under-the-radar singles on his own Prolific imprint, and lately he’s re-invented himself as a DJ, playing at forward-thinking raves like Shut Up and Crazy Legs, alongside younger DJs like Ben UFO, Joy Orbison and Reecha. New single ‘Gotta Have It’ is the perfect tipping point between 2step’s skip and the gutter house favoured by the likes of Zinc and Sinden, and he’s been working with vocalist Digga and Toddla T’s man MC Serocee.

His mix here is an accurate portrayal of his recent club sets: spanning across the board of garage’s legacy, with a healthy dose of classics alongside material from newer producers like L-Vis 1990. Oh, and you also get his killer remix of Zed Bias’ ‘Neighbourhood’. There’s no tracklisting, but we’re working on it – and really, you should know a couple of these at the very least. You know what to do:
